Israel threats to demolish a Palestinian water well in Area A
Israeli forces are threatening to demolish a water well belonging to MADICO, a Palestinian family owned business specialized in the production of Medjoul Dates. The company is located in the Jericho municipality, in Area A. The Israeli authorities have issued our company with a warning that they intend to demolish the water well from which the company waters its palm trees.
Should the demolition continue, 4,000 date palm trees would be demolished, leaving 35 people without jobs and 35 families without a source of income.
The well was constructed in 1961, under the Jordanian Authority. In 2007 the company tried to renew the license, but was denied by the Israeli authorities. The Israeli authorities are claiming that the well lies in Area C, despite documented proof that the well is in Area A.
In May 2011 the Israeli government issued a new warning that the well, the irrigation computer shelter and the workers housing must all be dismantled. The company has been prevented from using the well, and is forced to buy water at 7 times their previous cost. A three day warning to appeal the demolition expired today, and the company fears the demolition could take place at any time.
